Surviving spouse
Since the member had 10 or more years of service credit or met certain eligibility requirements in a law enforcement or public safety division, monthly benefits are effective the month following the member's death and payable throughout your life.
Surviving spouse who is age 62 or older
Since the member had less than 10 years of service credit, and based on your age, you are eligible for a benefit effective the month following the member's death, which will be payable throughout your life.
Surviving spouse qualified for service purchase
Since the member had less than 10 years of service credit, and based on your age, you are eligible for a monthly benefit effective the month after you attain age 62. However, should you choose to purchase the available service credit, you would be eligible to receive a monthly benefit the month following the member's death. The monthly benefit would be payable throughout your life.
Surviving spouse with minor child(ren)
Since the member had 10 or more years of service credit or met certain eligibility requirements in a law enforcement or public safety division, monthly benefits are effective the month following the member's death and payable throughout your life.
Surviving spouse who is under age 62 with child(ren)
Since the member had less than 10 years of service credit, benefits will continue for the child(ren) until age 18, at which time he/she will be eligible to receive his/her portion of the benefit directly until age 22 or until his/her first marriage, adoption by a person other than a stepparent, entry into active military service or death, whichever event occurs first. Based on your age, your portion of the benefit will terminate when there are no longer any eligible children receiving benefits. Your monthly benefits would resume the month after you attain age 62 and continue throughout your life.
Surviving spouse eligible due to child(ren) receiving benefits
Benefits will be paid to you only as long as there are eligible child(ren) receiving benefits. Benefits will be paid for the child(ren) until age 18 at which time they will be eligible to receive their own portion of the benefit until age 22 or until their first marriage, adoption by a person other than a stepparent, entry into active military service or death, whichever event occurs first.
Surviving spouse with disabled child(ren) in your care
Benefits will terminate at death or if the child is determined by a court or OPERS-appointed physician to no longer be physically or mentally disabled, at which time your eligibility would be determined.
Disabled surviving spouse
Since the member had less than 10 years of service credit, benefits will terminate at your death or if you are determined by a court or OPERS-appointed physician to no longer be physically or mentally disabled. If you no longer qualify for benefits as a disabled spouse, payments will be terminated until the month after you attain age 62, at which time benefits will resume, continuing throughout your life.
Surviving unmarried eligible child(ren)
Benefits will continue to you until age 18 or 22 or until your first marriage, adoption by a person other than a stepparent, entry into active military service or death, whichever event occurs first.
Surviving unmarried disabled child
Benefits will continue until your first marriage, adoption by a person other than a stepparent, entry into active military service, you are determined by a court or OPERS-appointed physician to no longer be physically or mentally disabled, or death, whichever event occurs first.
Surviving dependent parent
Benefits are payable throughout your life if you are 65 years old or older or regardless of age if you are physically or mentally incapacitated and you were receiving at least one-half of your support from the member during the 12 month period prior to the member's death.
Surviving spouse who is under age 62 with child(ren)
